OpenFed

OpenFed

OpenFed is the multilingual distribution developed for the Belgian federal public services — government-grade accessibility (WCAG), serious multilingual support and conservative, well-tested component choices. Those qualities travel well beyond Belgium: it's a sober foundation for any public body or institution with accessibility obligations.

What ships on BOA

The OFD platform is a pinned, tested build — the 12.2 line on the Drupal 10.2 core at the time of writing. It installs and serves exactly as tested and does not chase upstream releases; in-site updates are your own Composer workflow. Structural quirk: the docroot is docroot/ rather than web/.

Installing a site on it

Create a site on the OpenFed platform with the openfed profile. The first thing a fresh install shows you is its language selection screen — that's the distribution's multilingual heart working as designed, not an error page. Pick your language(s) and carry on; everything else is standard Drupal administration.

Good to know

  • Accessibility conformance lives in the distribution's components and your content choices; the hosting layer keeps out of the way — clean URLs, HTTPS (HTTPS and certificates) and correct headers are already handled.
  • Public-sector sites tend to need audit-friendly backup stories: every site here rides automatic nightly backups plus one-task Backup/Restore on demand (Backups and restores).
